Hello

Dear reader,

I hope you are well.

As tiny as the community still is, when I speak to people about what they do, I am fascinated by its potential. It was a week full of stories told and experienced by community members.

Last Tuesday, Sebastian and I co-hosted the Tuesday Get-together. For me, it was my first to work outside my office. We learned how to use the Brazilian voting machines. Afterwards, he and his wife graciously invited me to stay for dinner, and we all agreed on what a natural storyteller Ismar can be.

This was followed, on Thursday, by Maxime telling the story of one of his teachers doing crazy things on the university campus. Perhaps, the most poignant conversation was on Friday afternoon, when Lisa described her role in the Brazilian elections. As a Federal representative, she will spend the day at a polling station, ensuring people keep to the rules and helping the election run peacefully and smoothly. I hope we can do a follow-up after the event.

On Friday, Martin released his presentation on Kassel. It was a challenging process for him, and he has done a fantastic job.

Clarisse was motivated to create a small presentation of Wissembourg, which will be released in November. Babette worked through Wenya's presentation on Beijing, and Bernard had a lot of questions for her.

Brida is about people whose second language is English actively using the language to improve their abilities to communicate in it. And everybody can learn so much beyond language.

This brings me to my final point. Why not join Guy and his wife Geneviève on Friday, October 14, for our Sundowner Get Together? It will be a warm session in which we celebrate what French people love to do: eat and drink.

Thank you to all of you for doing this.

Best regards
Frank

Can Academics have fun?

Albert-Einstein

Maxime saw his Mathematics teacher racing a tractor around campus last week. Most unusual behaviour, he thought. He wants to know if academics can have fun. What do you think?

On this day, 1989.

It was a simple and careless mistake which changed history. As Germany celebrates 31 years of reunification this Monday, who can remember the momentous events of November 09, 1989? Martin in Kassel would like to know.
