When you learn something at school, you are supposed to be learning for your future and life. However, the system is designed so that you work with a teacher and receive an exam grade. You want to do well because the benchmark is a number or a letter grading.

But, suppose there is an alternative way? Instead of learning from a teacher, you learn from your own experience and that of others. And instead of receiving a grade from either a computer or a bored teacher, you receive feedback from your peers? And the quantity of feedback and the quality of the feedback is the measure of your success?

Everybody in the Brida Community has one goal. You want to improve your ability to communicate in English. Because of your previous education experience, you expect me to “teach” and then “provide feedback”, possibly even giving you a pat on the back or a gold star in the form of a grade.
Alle Mitglieder der Brida-Community haben das gleiche Ziel. Sie wollen Ihre Fähigkeit, auf Englisch zu kommunizieren, verbessern. Café Conversations are exactly that. Conversations. Sounds easy, doesn’t it?
Well, yes and no.
The first problem you are going to face is, “what am I going to talk about?” My life is private, what I do is normal, it’s not so interesting for others.
Falsch.
Café Conversations sind genau das. Unterhaltungen. Klingt einfach, nicht wahr?
Nun, ja und nein.
Das erste Problem, das sich Ihnen stellt, ist: “Worüber soll ich reden?” Mein Leben ist privat, was ich tue ist normal, es ist nicht so interessant für andere.
I agree with you on the first one. Yes, your life is private. But normal? What might be normal for you might be quite novel for somebody else. You see, people confuse “normal” with “mundane”. So, your morning routine might be mundane, because everybody does the same thing in the mornings. However, what happens if you have to walk 5km to get the water you need to perform the mundane task of personal hygiene? It might be normal for one person but incomprehensible for another. Therein lies the difference, and that will generate a whole host of questions.
Beim ersten Punkt stimme ich Ihnen zu. Ja, Ihr Leben ist privat. Aber normal? Was für Sie normal ist, kann für jemand anderen ganz neu sein. Die Leute verwechseln nämlich “normal” mit “alltäglich”. Now that we have established the normality of our lives, we can branch out a little. What do you do? What have you seen, experienced, watched, read, eaten? All perfectly normal things? For you. But not necessarily for others.

And what happens in our Café Conversations is exactly this. You share exciting, normal, unusual, and different experiences, knowledge, and wisdom with others. They are not exactly your friends, but they aren’t strangers either. You all have one common goal: you want to improve your ability to communicate in English. That’s the glue that holds you together.
Und genau das passiert in unseren Café Conversations. Sie teilen spannende, normale, ungewöhnliche und andere Erfahrungen, Wissen und Weisheit mit anderen. Es sind nicht gerade Ihre Freunde, aber auch keine Fremden. Sie alle haben ein gemeinsames Ziel: Sie wollen Ihre Fähigkeit, sich auf Englisch zu verständigen, verbessern. Das ist der Klebstoff, der Sie zusammenhält.
Okay, so you have found a topic that you want to share with community members. How do you formulate this topic so that you get feedback from other community members and not a grade from a bored teacher? And remember, feedback is not an evaluation in the form of a number or a letter. Feedback is how the members react. If they don’t react, well then that too is a reaction, only not the one you wanted. If they react positively, or negatively, with or without questions, then you have something to work with. And their reaction will provoke a counter-reaction from you.
Nehmen wir an, Sie haben ein Thema gefunden, das Sie mit den Mitgliedern der Gemeinschaft teilen möchten. Wie formulieren Sie dieses Thema so, dass Sie ein Feedback von anderen Community-Mitgliedern erhalten und nicht eine Note von einem gelangweilten Lehrer? Und denken Sie daran: Feedback ist keine Bewertung in Form einer Zahl oder eines Buchstabens. Feedback bedeutet, wie die Mitglieder reagieren. How does this work? Well, you have an idea you want to share. You discuss it with others in your circle and with me. You write it as a post or an article and it gets published. It flows into my central tool of steering the community: the Mocha Map. And people will read your post or article and then comment on it in the comments. Again, this reaction will be supported by me.

The longer you stay in the community, the more you will learn what interests people. You can join in the general conversation, or you can be provocative and kickstart something new. You can do it alone, or you can do it with other community members. Whatever happens, this is where I step in and support you.

My support comes in two forms. In the technical aspect of the language, grammar and vocabulary. But more importantly, my support comes in advice, ideas and suggestions.

Consider this: whether you like them or not, the people who shape our lives, the Mark Zuckerbergs, Elon Musks, Jeff Bezos and so on, had an idea, then thought it through with other people who helped them make this idea financially and intellectually successful. Of course, many are opposed to these products. They THINK that Facebook, X or Amazon are not good ideas.
Sam Altman is credited with developing ChatGPT. How long do you think he and others thought about making it the success it has become today?
